Facebook’s debut is modest, high volumes cause problems. Facebook Inc shares rose less than expected on their first day of trade on Friday and huge order volume caused technical problems that marred the coming out party of the No. 1 online social network. Its shares were up 8 percent in early afternoon trading on the Nasdaq, after opening 11 percent higher and then rapidly heading south to touch their initial public offering price of $38. The gains were below market forecasts of as much as a 50 percent jump. “We have got some unhappy guys out there,” said Wayne Kaufman, chief market strategist at John Thomas Financial, a retail broker on Wall Street. “They were hoping for Facebook to be considerably better. I bet there are a lot of disappointed people in the market.”

Job Openings Highest In Nearly 4 Years.

U.S. companies in March posted the highest number of job openings in nearly four years, a sign that hiring could strengthen in the coming months after slowing this spring. The Labor Department said Tuesday that employers advertised 3.74 million job openings in March. That’s up from a revised 3.57 million in February. The March figure was the highest since July 2008, just before the financial crisis erupted that fall.

Splunk, an enterprise data company, will be making its debut on the public markets this morning after pricing its IPO at $17.00 per share (this is up from the range of $11 to $13 per share). At this price, Splunk is valued at a whopping $1.57 billion. Splunk, whose stock will begin trading on the Nasdaq today under the symbol “SPLK,” raised $230 million in the offering.

Microsoft Launches A Whole New Company To Deal With Open Source.

Microsoft has spun off a subsidiary just to deal with its work on open source software and standards. The new company is called Microsoft Open Technologies, Inc., and it will be run by Microsoft’s long-term open source advocate, Jean Paoli. The group will manage all the work that Microsoft does with standards bodies as well as the contributions Microsoft makes to open source projects.

The residential real estate bubble isn’t the only real estate challenge facing startups in Silicon Valley.

The residential real estate bubble isn’t the only real estate challenge facing startups in Silicon Valley. Office space within the city limits is becoming more scarce by the day as tech companies continue their aggressive growth.

Relief is on the way, but it isn’t an instant solution. The San Francisco Giants announced a $1.6 billion plan last week that would add 1000 rental units and 1.7 million feet of office space in the 27 acres that is currently being used as their parking lot. That’s wonderful, but construction won’t begin until 2015 and the estimated completion date is 2021.

Most of the large-scale new construction projects are happening in Mission Bay. There are only a few physical spaces where large office projects could be built in San Francisco without displacing something else, and they sell for a premium. Many of those lots are located in Mission Bay, Dogpatch, and the Central Waterfront. New construction will ease the pressure, but it’s not going to happen fast enough to satisfy the current demand.

Because the city is surrounded by water on three sides and the citizens are very protective of their open spaces, new development will likely require the “Manhattanization” of the city. New construction will go upward instead of outward, and the density will increase. New high-rise office buildings are a good solution to the city’s growing needs, but they won’t be built fast enough to help with the current shortage of space. The result? Higher prices for everyone for the short-term.

What about the piers? The aging piers along the waterfront are largely under-utilized and could alleviate some pain if they were made available to companies who need space. Last fall, the tenants at Pier 38 (Automattic, Dogpatch Labs, and True Ventures, among others) were evicted when the Port of San Francisco deemed the property unsafe and issued a condemnation order. The piers are ideal candidates for redevelopment efforts, and the America’s Cup deal is a step in the right direction. Some ambitious action from those who occupy powerful political offices (hint, hint) would help the entire startup ecosystem.

Companies looking for space on the Peninsula are having a tough time as well. For example, tech startups in downtown Mountain View are being forced into storefront retail space because of the lack of inventory. Retail space is much more expensive than traditional office space. If a company has to spend an exorbitant amount of money on office space, that eats away at the amount of money they can use to hire talented employees.

Good news! The “sharing economy” is helping create some efficiency in the market. The movement still isn’t a large enough part of the market to be significant, but it’s gaining traction. The explosion of shared office environments, like LiquidSpace and Loose Cubes is helping with the short-term crunch, and it remains to be seen whether or not they will be long-term players.

If you’re in the market for space, find a commercial leasing agent who works in the areas that interest you. Commercial real estate is a different monster than residential real estate, and many of the available spaces won’t be advertised online. Walk the area and call any agents you find with “For Lease” signs posted. Those are the agents who will know about office space that’s not being advertised and space that will available soon. Make friends with those agents.

Consider short-term or temporary space if you can’t find a suitable location. Start by checking with the companies who are in the news for signing big leases. They won’t fill all of their new space from day one, and may be interested in sub-leasing some of it. Places likeRocketspace and NextSpace are good short-term solutions if they have enough space for you.

And if you get desperate, you can go with the “rent a mansion” solution.

There is no magic bullet or perfect solution for the commercial real estate situation in Silicon Valley. Like any market, real estate fluctuates based on supply and demand. Like any market, the early movers win. So get moving.

Here is a heads-up alert for you: be prepared because not only will the infamous “War For Talent” be returning to impact your firm, but it is already underway in its full intensity here in the Silicon Valley. Begin planning for this next round of talent wars, because once the intense competition begins, there simply won’t be time to catch up with, no less get ahead of your talent competition. If you’re not familiar with the “war for talent” phenomena, it involves a prolonged period of intense competition where top applicants are both scarce and arrogant, employees leave by the droves, firms regularly raid each other for talent, and bidding for top talent is commonplace.

Why James Whittaker Decided To Leave Google.

Ok, I relent. Everyone wants to know why I left and answering individually isn’t scaling so here it is, laid out in its long form. Read a little (I get to the punch line in the 3rd paragraph) or read it all. But a warning in advance: there is no drama here, no tell-all, no former colleagues bashed and nothing more than you couldn’t already surmise from what’s happening in the press these days surrounding Google and its attitudes toward user privacy and software developers. This is simply a more personal telling.

It wasn’t an easy decision to leave Google. During my time there I became fairly passionate about the company. I keynoted four Google Developer Day events, two Google Test Automation Conferences and was a prolific contributor to the Google testing blog. Recruiters often asked me to help sell high priority candidates on the company. No one had to ask me twice to promote Google and no one was more surprised than me when I could no longer do so. In fact, my last three months working for Google was a whirlwind of desperation, trying in vain to get my passion back.

The Google I was passionate about was a technology company that empowered its employees to innovate. The Google I left was an advertising company with a single corporate-mandated focus.

Technically I suppose Google has always been an advertising company, but for the better part of the last three years, it didn’t feel like one. Google was an ad company only in the sense that a good TV show is an ad company: having great content attracts advertisers.

Under Eric Schmidt ads were always in the background. Google was run like an innovation factory, empowering employees to be entrepreneurial through founder’s awards, peer bonuses and 20% time. Our advertising revenue gave us the headroom to think, innovate and create. Forums like App Engine, Google Labs and open source served as staging grounds for our inventions. The fact that all this was paid for by a cash machine stuffed full of advertising loot was lost on most of us. Maybe the engineers who actually worked on ads felt it, but the rest of us were convinced that Google was a technology company first and foremost; a company that hired smart people and placed a big bet on their ability to innovate.

From this innovation machine came strategically important products like Gmail and Chrome, products that were the result of entrepreneurship at the lowest levels of the company. Of course, such runaway innovative spirit creates some duds, and Google has had their share of those, but Google has always known how to fail fast and learn from it.

In such an environment you don’t have to be part of some executive’s inner circle to succeed. You don’t have to get lucky and land on a sexy project to have a great career. Anyone with ideas or the skills to contribute could get involved. I had any number of opportunities to leave Google during this period, but it was hard to imagine a better place to work.

But that was then, as the saying goes, and this is now.

It turns out that there was one place where the Google innovation machine faltered and that one place mattered a lot: competing with Facebook. Informal efforts produced a couple of antisocial dogs in Wave and Buzz. Orkut never caught on outside Brazil. Like the proverbial hare confident enough in its lead to risk a brief nap, Google awoke from its social dreaming to find its front runner status in ads threatened.

Google could still put ads in front of more people than Facebook, but Facebook knows so much more about those people. Advertisers and publishers cherish this kind of personal information, so much so that they are willing to put the Facebook brand before their own. Exhibit A: www.facebook.com/nike, a company with the power and clout of Nike putting their own brand after Facebook’s? No company has ever done that for Google and Google took it personally.

Larry Page himself assumed command to right this wrong. Social became state-owned, a corporate mandate called Google+. It was an ominous name invoking the feeling that Google alone wasn’t enough. Search had to be social. Android had to be social. You Tube, once joyous in their independence, had to be … well, you get the point. Even worse was that innovation had to be social. Ideas that failed to put Google+ at the center of the universe were a distraction.

Suddenly, 20% meant half-assed. Google Labs was shut down. App Engine fees were raised. APIs that had been free for years were deprecated or provided for a fee. As the trappings of entrepreneurship were dismantled, derisive talk of the “old Google” and its feeble attempts at competing with Facebook surfaced to justify a “new Google” that promised “more wood behind fewer arrows.”

The days of old Google hiring smart people and empowering them to invent the future was gone. The new Google knew beyond doubt what the future should look like. Employees had gotten it wrong and corporate intervention would set it right again.

Officially, Google declared that “sharing is broken on the web” and nothing but the full force of our collective minds around Google+ could fix it. You have to admire a company willing to sacrifice sacred cows and rally its talent behind a threat to its business. Had Google been right, the effort would have been heroic and clearly many of us wanted to be part of that outcome. I bought into it. I worked on Google+ as a development director and shipped a bunch of code. But the world never changed; sharing never changed. It’s arguable that we made Facebook better, but all I had to show for it was higher review scores.

As it turned out, sharing was not broken. Sharing was working fine and dandy, Google just wasn’t part of it. People were sharing all around us and seemed quite happy. A user exodus from Facebook never materialized. I couldn’t even get my own teenage daughter to look at Google+ twice, “social isn’t a product,” she told me after I gave her a demo, “social is people and the people are on Facebook.” Google was the rich kid who, after having discovered he wasn’t invited to the party, built his own party in retaliation. The fact that no one came to Google’s party became the elephant in the room.

Google+ and me, we were simply never meant to be. Truth is I’ve never been much on advertising. I don’t click on ads. When Gmail displays ads based on things I type into my email message it creeps me out. I don’t want my search results to contain the rants of Google+ posters (or Facebook’s or Twitter’s for that matter). When I search for “London pub walks” I want better than the sponsored suggestion to “Buy a London pub walk at Wal-Mart.”

The old Google made a fortune on ads because they had good content. It was like TV used to be: make the best show and you get the most ad revenue from commercials. The new Google seems more focused on the commercials themselves.

Perhaps Google is right. Perhaps the future lies in learning as much about people’s personal lives as possible. Perhaps Google is a better judge of when I should call my mom and that my life would be better if I shopped that Nordstrom sale. Perhaps if they nag me enough about all that open time on my calendar I’ll work out more often. Perhaps if they offer an ad for a divorce lawyer because I am writing an email about my 14 year old son breaking up with his girlfriend I’ll appreciate that ad enough to end my own marriage. Or perhaps I’ll figure all this stuff out on my own.

Some 14 million new jobs will be created by 2015 thanks to cloud computing, a new study predicts. Buthalf of these jobs will be in India and China. Still, 1.2 million new “cloud-enabled” jobs will be created in the U.S. and Canada, the study says. And, if these predictions hold true, that’s nothing to sneeze at. The report was commissioned by Microsoft and done by market research firm IDC.

Unfilled jobs push high-tech hiring engine to max.

Rarely a day goes by without news of a new tech company opening up in the Bay Area, or an established one expanding its footprint in the city and increasing its staff.

Salesforce.com said last week that its hiring needs are such that it can’t wait for its planned Mission Bay campus to be built to accommodate them. On Thursday, Macys.com said it had signed on for an additional 240,000 square feet of office space to “accommodate our needs as we move to the next level of growth,” according to Macys.com President Kent Anderson.

Survey: Employees say it’s just ‘OK’ to work at Microsoft.

On a scale of 1 to 5, workers at Microsoft gave their workplace a 3.4 rating, but CEO Steve Ballmer’s approval rating continues to erode. That’s according to a new Tech Report Card survey from Glassdoor, which has Ballmer’s approval rating at 35 percent, down from last year’s approval rating of 49 percent. Facebook was the No. 1 tech company to work for, according to Glassdoor. Google was No. 3 and Apple was No. 4. The CEOs from those three tech companies all enjoyed approval ratings above 89 percent. Microsoft was No. 22.

Competition for tech workers continues to heat up, according to the latest survey from Dice.com that says the surge in hiring has pushed the tech unemployment rate below 4 percent in the U.S. (The overall U.S. jobless rate is 9.1 percent). With so many tech companies hiring, positions are staying open for months due to a shortage of qualified technology professionals. (Reuters) – LinkedIn Corp said it would offer 7.84 million shares in its initial public offering, which could value the company at over $3 billion at the high end of its offering price range. YouTube founders acquire Delicious!

It looks like social bookmarking site Delicious will have a healthy afterlife. Yahoo, which acquired the site in 2005, just announced that Delicious has been sold to YouTube founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen. Hurley and Chen are apparently incorporating Delicious into a new startup called Avos. They aren’t revealing much about what Avos will be, but a press release says that they’re trying to “develop innovative features to help solve the problem of information overload.”

Unemployment falls in two-thirds of states.

The unemployment rate fell in two-thirds of the nation’s states last month, the latest evidence that the strengthening economy is encouraging many employers to boost hiring.

The Labor Department said Tuesday that the unemployment rate dropped in 34 states in March. That’s the largest number of states to record a decline since June. The rate rose in seven states and was unchanged in nine and Washington, D.C.

Employers hired more workers in 38 states. A government survey of employer payrolls found only 12 states plus Washington, D.C. lost jobs last month, the fewest since October.
